What does the HPV vaccine protect against?

Gardasil 9 protects against nine types of HPV. These cause most cases of cervical cancer, as well as some anal, vaginal, vulvar and head and neck cancers, and most genital warts.

Who can have the HPV vaccine?

The vaccine is licensed for teenagers and adults aged 9 to 45. It works best before exposure to HPV, but many older adults still benefit. A clinician confirms suitability at your appointment.

How many doses will I need?

It depends on your age when you start. People aged 9 to 14 usually need two doses, and people aged 15 to 45 usually need three doses over six months. A clinician confirms your schedule.

I had the vaccine at school. Do I need more?

If you completed the course offered in school you are unlikely to need further doses. If you missed one or more doses, a clinician can advise on what you need.

Does it replace cervical screening?

No. The vaccine does not protect against every type of HPV, so routine cervical screening, or smear tests, remain important even after vaccination.

Do I need a GP referral?
