Planning travel to an area where typhoid is present? The typhoid vaccine in Great Yarmouth is worth considering if your destination or activities increase your risk of infection through contaminated food or water. At Pharmacyexprezz we provide typhoid vaccination as part of a full travel health assessment, so you only receive what is relevant to your trip.
What is Typhoid?
Typhoid is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. It is spread mainly through food or water contaminated with the bacteria. Symptoms can include prolonged fever, headache, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea, and general weakness. In some cases the illness can be severe.
The risk is highest in parts of South Asia, Africa, and some areas of Latin America and the Middle East.
Who Should Consider the Typhoid Vaccine?
Visiting Local Population
Recommended for travellers staying in local homes or residing within communities in endemic areas.
Unverified Food & Water
Essential for frequent or prolonged exposure to basic conditions where sanitation and food hygiene are poor.
Long-Duration Itineraries
Recommended when travelling to higher-risk endemic countries for extended periods.
Visiting Friends & Relatives (VFR)
High priority for individuals visiting family abroad due to closer daily contact with local food and water supplies.
There is no vaccine that protects against paratyphoid. Good food and water hygiene remains essential even after typhoid vaccination.
How is the Typhoid Vaccine Given?
The most commonly used vaccine in the UK is an injectable polysaccharide vaccine (such as Typhim Vi). It is given as a single dose and is suitable for adults and children from 2 years of age.
Protection typically lasts around three years. A booster is recommended at three-year intervals for people who remain at continued risk.
An oral live vaccine is also available for some travellers (from 5 years of age), taken as three capsules on alternate days. Suitability depends on age, medical history and other factors, and is assessed during the consultation.

Food and Water Precautions Still Matter
The vaccine reduces the risk of typhoid but does not eliminate it completely. Continue to follow basic precautions in risk areas:
Food & Water Safety Guidelines
Even when vaccinated, maintaining strict food and water hygiene is vital to protect against gastrointestinal illness while traveling:
- Safe Water: Drink bottled, boiled, or chemically treated water.
- Ice Caution: Avoid ice unless you know it was prepared from safe water.
- Cooked Foods: Eat thoroughly cooked food served hot.
- Raw Foods: Avoid raw vegetables, salads, and fruits that you cannot peel yourself.
- Hand Hygiene: Practise regular hand hygiene using soap and water or alcohol hand rub.
