Planning a trip to an area where chikungunya is circulating? The chikungunya vaccine in Norfolk is now an option for some travellers, but it is not recommended for every destination or every person.

At Pharmacyexprezz in Great Yarmouth we provide travel health consultations and can advise whether vaccination is appropriate for your itinerary.

What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes (the same type that can transmit dengue and Zika). Symptoms often include sudden high fever and severe joint pain, which can last for weeks or months in some people. Other features may include headache, muscle pain, rash and fatigue. Most people recover, but the joint pain can be debilitating and prolonged.

The virus is found in parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas and, more recently, in some areas of Europe during warmer months when local transmission has occurred.

Do You Need the Chikungunya Vaccine?

Not automatically. Vaccination is considered on a case-by-case basis rather than as a routine travel vaccine for every trip.

It may be discussed if you are:

  • Travelling to a region with an active chikungunya outbreak
  • Making a long stay or frequent trips to areas where the virus has been transmitted in recent years
  • At higher individual risk because of your planned activities or health profile

Short trips to cities with good mosquito control and limited outdoor exposure usually carry a lower risk. Your destination, season of travel, length of stay and planned activities all matter. Mosquito-bite prevention remains essential whether or not you are vaccinated.

How is the Vaccine Given?

Both vaccines are given as a single dose. The need for booster doses has not yet been established. Your clinician will advise on timing relative to your departure date.

Bite Prevention Still Matters

Bite Prevention Advice

Vaccination reduces disease risk but does not replace bite prevention. Always follow these essential safety steps:

1. Insect Repellent

Use effective repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or an equivalent active ingredient.

2. Protective Clothing

Wear long, loose-fitting clothing, especially during peak mosquito activity hours.

3. Bed Netting

Sleep under insecticide-treated nets if accommodation lacks full screening.

4. Peak Hours & Water

Take extra care around dawn, dusk, and near areas with standing water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the chikungunya vaccine recommended for all travellers to the tropics?

No. It is considered mainly for people travelling to areas with active outbreaks or those making longer or repeated trips to regions with recent transmission.

Can older adults have the vaccine?

Vimkunya can be considered from age 12 with no upper age limit in current guidance. IXCHIQ has stricter age and health restrictions and is not used in people aged 60 and over.

How far in advance should I get vaccinated?

This depends on which vaccine is suitable for you. Some options need to be given well before travel. Book a travel consultation as early as possible so timing can be planned properly.

Does the vaccine protect against dengue or Zika as well?

No. It is specific to chikungunya. Separate measures (and in some cases other vaccines) are needed for other mosquito-borne infections.

Is a GP referral required?

No. You can book a travel health appointment directly at Pharmacyexprezz.
